All this drama and Too Many Notes.
In case you hadn't guessed, the new story began here. It took me more than a month to figure out how to handle the past week's worth of strips. I really struggled with how this confrontation would play out, and for a while I was kicking myself for burning down Yesman & Puckerup and outing Carol to Tiffany as an indirect result.
I tried hard to write several strips where the girls talk things out, throwing in a punchline every so often along the way, but it ran about 7 or 8 strips long and it all fell so flat. Then it finally occurred to me that Carol and Tiffany haven't gotten along for a while, and each girl would probably be really mad at the other -- Carol would be terrified that her secret could get back to Alan -- and we've never seen any two characters get into a really ugly fight. So here we are.
It was fun to write and draw something that was so different and full of energy. The only drawback is that the whole sequence seems to have this weird, negative vibe and after scripting this all week, I sort of feel like I walked in on my parents screaming and throwing dishes at each other.
I just want to assure everyone that I'm working to bring back the office/dating/spy/fantasy sitcom you've been reading for the past four years (!) as fast as I can. Please don't think I'm turning the strip into Mary Worth or Funky Winkerbean.
Too Many Notes
Work continues on the trade paperback Too Many Notes, which will contain all Suburban Tribe strips from the year 2006 (including the unpublished story Humbuggered) as well as the very first 25 strips with commentary. I have just finished writing the commentary and it is pretty darn extensive. I will take pre-orders on this trade as soon as I have the covers drawn and colored, hopefully within 3 weeks or so.

Great job, John, except I take real offense at your Funky Winkerbean crack. It is one damn well-written strip, one that has kept my attention for more than twenty years. See you in 2023.
Ah! This is all exciting, but...is there no strip tonight?
I just spent the whole night emailing with a fellow graduate student, worrying about a paper I have to give in March, and trying to imagine that the things I do have any value.
So I'm dying for my ST fix. For what it's worth, I think the confrontation between the girls has been very good. The kind of thing that really could fall flat, and I don't think it has. Carol's face sure has changed since the dinosaur dig.
I can't wait for the trade, and supercongrats on a very compelling set of strips. Suburban Tribe has become my favorite webcomic to visit... and that's ahead of comics like Joe and Monkey, Penny Arcade, and a hair or two beyond the wonderful Joe Loves Crappy Movies.
I think you're doing an awesome job! I love Carol and her storyline. (I've said this several times, haven't I?) Anyways, hey, don't worry about any wait we have to endure- any thought you can put into this to make it greater than it already is will be worth it!
John,
First, I'm excited about the book. I have been since Wizard World Chicago... what '04? when I picked up one of your small stapled mini comics. And second, I'm also excited with the direction the strip is taking. You obviously care a lot about the story and where your characters are going and I appreciate the work you're putting into the strip.
As if this run wasn't good enough, that's a great "action shot" of Caesar in panel two there.
Yeah, man, don't feel bad about this storyline at all.
I already bought 1-3...but sue me, I'm pre-ordering the trade anyway. :D
Can't wait to see how the current storyline will play out!
OK John, take heed, ST is doing fine and you are awesome. So go do this now... for variety.

Yeah, he did it, and unfortunately for like three months in a row they ignored it, not even an honorable mention, and when he resubmitted they told him enough, they already had it. Seems they have a problem with... what? L!osers!
I believe the (non)winning comic is in ST#3.
